Week 6 of my internship at PublicSource was filled with voicemails and emails once again as I continued to work on a few stories. It is hard to believe that it is already October, and I am still excited for what is to come from this experience.
On Tuesday, I started by reaching back out to the team of doctors who are going to work on a new fertility clinic in the area. I also continued to leave messages at a local school that has an Artificial Intelligence (AI) lab I am interested in covering in terms of my AI in schools story. I then had my weekly meeting with my reporter mentor. We touched base on me potentially helping out with a few stories that the higher education reporter is working on, and I gave some intel of my own for a story they are working on about Point Park's conflicts of interest.
Thursday was a busy day as well. I started my day by fact-checking a story on funding for home renovations in the Lower Hill District. I then made some calls again for the trans fertility clinic and AI in schools stories I am working on. I was able to talk briefly with the communications director at Sto-Rox School District, who should hopefully be putting me in contact for a call with the superintendent next week. I also spoke with the director of a local trans organization to speak on the clinic. We had our weekly lunch-and-learn which was a check-in on the fact-checking process. Then we also had our weekly intern meeting and talked about websites that have public records information. I also sorted through some files for a story on perceived problems in family court that I will be working on with an experienced freelancer. I was glad to have a busy day and finally get through to some sources. I like it when my days are busy, giving more confidence in my reporting skills.
Below is the City Council story I helped with reporting last week. I sadly did not get a full byline, but my name is listed at the bottom of the story:
