This week for my practicum was fairly normal and simple up until the very end of the week.
Monday was a normal layout session with no pitch meeting in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. I worked on the news section primarily, showing the new news editor some InDesign tricks. I also helped the other section editors with proofreading titles and general layout with photos.
On Thursday, there was a shooting near campus, so while staying safe, I helped manage staff to cover the story through our Slack channel and campus alerts. It was interesting to be the one giving tips instead of the one receiving them. I am usually the one to go out and hunt down a story, but the experience overall was good to get me ready to be the editor-in-chief next year.
Friday was filled with preparing for the next issues, as I worked on the news briefs and The Globe's Point. I also worked on a news story about the Center for Inclusive Excellence (CIE) and the monthly workshops that they will be holding throughout the semester. I reached out to students to discuss how they have felt since the office is back, instead of being the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and conducted an interview with the office director.
Here is this week's Globe's Point and my news story on the Canvas pilot program.
