Only two issues left of the semester!
This week was a little bit of a scramble to get all pages filled in this week's issue, as the majority of the staff went home for the Easter holiday (me included). I did my normal weekly responsibilities of writing the Globe's Point and the news briefs. I also wrote an opinion's piece on how the university needs a day off between spring break and finals, as a lot of us were feeling burnout; you could just feel the vibe in layout.
This week, I led the layout session all by myself with minimal help from the editor-in-chief. It was not very different from normal weeks, as I still had to help the news editor with the news section, but what was a little different is that I had more of a say in what stories went where. I drew up what stories I wanted where on the board to make it simple for the editors and answered questions throughout the session. I think it went fairly well because our editors are very experienced and because it is so close to the end of the semester. I am very excited to take on the position in the fall.

As for the rest of the week, I worked on covering a few miscellaneous events on campus and my normal weekly duties. I also attended the Society for Professional Journalists' Region 4 and 5 Conference in Chicago with the co features and A&E editor, as the newspaper was nominated for an award. It was a really great experience all around. The newspaper actually won best all-around small student newspaper in our region, and our editor-in-chief won an award for best small general news reporting for his piece on the Post-Gazette workers strike. It was a little difficult to balance my weekly duties and the conference, but like always, the layout gets filled and done.
