This week for my practicum as the editor-elect of the student-run newspaper The Globe, I focused mainly on checking in with new writers contributing to the paper, helping them find sources, writing structure, and getting them more involved.
On Monday, I helped organize an interview with someone who makes promotional videos on campus to make one for The Globe. Also, during the pitch meeting, the editor-in-chief and I did a mini workshop for the newer writers, outlining the guidelines for submission to the paper and setting them up with our Slack channel and the editor's Gmail accounts. During layout, I worked on the news section all by myself and helped the newer sports editor with their section. I also edited some submissions with the new copy editor, showing them the general process and getting them familiar with AP style.
Here is the Globe's Point for this week that I wrote.
On Tuesday and Friday, I finally started working on a story that got pitched a few weeks ago, which was that work study students on campus have been getting their hours cut. I reached out to some students that a staff member sent me and reached out to our university spokesperson to see if there is any administration that I can talk to.
We also got a university email on Tuesday that we have another new interim president and actually got sent some confidential information sent to the staff, which was very interesting. The editor-in-chief and I immediately did some digging and worked throughout the rest of the week and weekend to put together a story.
