This week I started my 10-week internship at my hometown newspaper, The Sharon Herald. I worked Monday, May 9 through the 12 for a total of 20 hours. My first two days were filled with a bunk of paperwork to get me registered into the paper's systems for payroll, website editing, and so forth, which included watching a very old video on driver's safety, as I will be driving to places where I am assigned to report (still do not know if I will get reimbursed for my driving, which would be nice).
I also got to shadow one of the main photographers and a reporter for a ladder company's grand opening on my first day after being assigned to cover Franklin, PA's Applefest for a tourist's guide to the area that the paper is working on with several other publications. View my story on my home page! On my second day, I learned how to cover local police and fire news along with court reports by shadowing one of the reporters assigned to this beat, then finishing the job for them when they left for the day.
On Wednesday, I got to experience my first staff meeting where the editor touched based with each reporter, photographer, and digital editor on each of their assignments where staff got to bounces ideas off of each other if they were having any issues or how to better their stories. I also went out with the photographer to a meet and greet with U.S. Senate Democratic Candidate John Fetterman, shadowing him on how to cover local meetings and how to interview attendees. I also shadowed the videographer and photographer a little. Then, I did some research on another candidate on the primary ballot for PA Governor, which I will be covering his meet and greet the following day.
For Thursday, I covered a meet and greet, much similar to the day before, with PA Governor Democratic candidate Josh Shapiro and his running mate, Austin Davis, who is running for lieutenant governor. I wrote and edited the story before the end of my shift. Check it out here! I then planned out the following week's work schedule by researching any events in the area next week.
